Google CEO Eric Schmidt said the company would probably participate in the 700 MHz auction next year. Google had been hoping the FCC would mandate that companies that won the new spectrum resell access to it at a wholesale price. However the FCC did not include this provision, and only set aside one-third of the spectrum for open access to all device and software. However additional comments from Schmidt indicate the company sees providing wireless access as yet another way to allow the internet to grow and keep it open.
